UMC Utrecht – Consultation room of the future

The consultation room of the future for the UMC Utrecht is characterized by a cozy atmosphere and various technological innovations.

As part of the program “Outpatients clinic of the future” and ahead of the complete renovation of the outpatients clinic of the Cancer Centre, a new interior design was developed.

The design is a perfect example of Co design: doctors, nurses and patients have contributed to the specification and ideation which resulted in a well considered result.

Based on the requirement specification Well Design developed a totally new interior including an innovative piece of furniture.

This dedicated piece of furniture is a combination of a table and a room divider. As the meetings are often about difficult subjects, comforting surrounding is required. The room combines an efficient workspace for the physician with privacy for the patient, open and yet secure. The Room divider separates the examination area from the meeting area and at the same time guarantees privacy for the patient.

The investigation side offers privacy with a pleasant and fresh atmosphere

The current familiar situation with an office desk positions the doctor at an angle relative to his monitor and hinders eye contact with his patient. Because in the present situation almost all information is presented digitally and the

Electronic patient file has to be updated real-time. A new layout was mandatory.

The new lay-out provides more freedom of movement for the monitor, a more ergonomic sound posture for the physician with uninterrupted eye contact with his patient. The additional monitor makes information exchange easier and matches the trend that patients want to be better informed more and more.

The consultation room has been put in to use as from June 1st. By the end of 2009 the results will be evaluated.

First reactions are very positive.
