VAB - Safe respiration and monitoring

Hospital patients under light anaesthesia or pain control are relatively prone to complications. Without realising it, they can suffer oxygen deficiency for brief or even extended periods.

The monitoring systems currently in use are generally tailored to operating theatres or intensive care. In practice, though, there is a growing need for effective respiratory monitoring elsewhere as well.

As part of our contribution to the Utrecht-based Medical Technology Innovation Centre (MTIC), WeLL Design recently facilitated a brainstorming session for specialists from UMC Utrecht and medical solutions company Elana BV. We then produced initial visualisations of a possible product: a simple, portable monitoring system. A broad group of experts is now working on potential ideas, whilst the medical centre has produced a first proof of principle. Research into the product’s commercial viability is also under way. A good understanding of the market is essential to success in this field.
